iLembe Book Festival

Reading is a Right, Not a Privilege.

The iLembe Book Festival (IBF) is a collaborative literary event that brings together readers, writers, and creatives from the iLembe District Municipality and surrounding communities. The festival features panel discussions, a school outreach programme, poetry workshops, and a slam poetry event, all aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and the spoken word.

As a community-driven non-profit event, the iLembe Book Festival relies on your support. Your donation helps us create a unique opportunity for readers across the region to connect with authors, discover new books, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading.

The Happiness Literary Foundation (HLF) (NPC registration number: 2022/460246/08) an artist-run, not-for-profit organisation that fosters and promotes the culture of reading and writing within South Africa communities and invests in the professional development of local artists.

HLF’s objectives are to:

  • Contribute to building a culture of reading and writing among people of all ages within the iLembe District Municipality and surrounding areas.
  • Establish a major cultural event in the district that is accessible and appealing to all social groups, and that fosters social connectedness (social cohesion) within the community.
  • Showcase the best of local writing, with a spotlight on talent from the province.
  • Promote the use and inclusion of local languages, especially isiZulu.

With two of the committee members, Nozizwe Cynthia Jele and Dudu Busani-Dube having recently moved to KwaDukuza Municipality, it was clear that there are limited events that feature literature in the district and municipality. The idea of iLembe Book Festival was born from there.

iLembe District Municipality is about 65km north of Durban and is endowed with a wealth of rich historical and cultural history. iLembe comprises four local municipalities between Durban and Richards Bay: Mandeni, KwaDukuza, Maphumulo and Ndwedwe.
